To begin a little on my background. I successfully gained 1st dan black belt in taekwondo in 1997, and continued competing til late 90s, while also achieving referee qualification in 1998. I also trained under British Combat Association (BCA) and Geoff Thompson. In 1998, I qualified as a registered self protection instructor, following onto be certified senior instructor in 2002 under BCA. I assisted instructing women’s self defence. Muay Thai start in mid 90’s, gave me passion and directions to regularly fight in competition, winning a national amateur title, and in 2003 a professional southern area championship belt.
In recognition of my Muay Thai fight career and training experiences, in 2001 I was awarded a red armband (equivalent 1st Dan). In 2003 I travelled and trained in a Muay Thai gym in Minsk Belarus. On return to the UK, I assisted instructing juniors. In September 2004 I successfully organised and managed a children’s Muay Thai charity show with total of £1000 raised for a local school. Subsequently, I was invited to travel to Romania with the local school team for voluntary work. The work included coaching Muay Thai to Romanian children. I permanently left King Tiger Gym Weymouth in 2005, to live and train abroad in Minsk, Belarus. During my time at Patriot Gym Minsk, I travelled with the Belarusian Muay Thai team to the world amateur championships at Rajadamnern Stadium, Thailand.
I am immensely grateful to the Muay Thai world and those coaches and mentors within, who kept me on a straight path and taught me not only Muay Thai knowledge and skill, but many invaluable life lessons too. I think that is pretty cool and that is why I have chosen to become a coach again, to give others the great experiences and opportunities I was given in the world of a martial arts community. My personal experiences of instability at home in Manchester from childhood to adulthood was indeed challenging! Finding martial arts redirected my life in a more positive direction. I successfully gained BSc in nursing at University and I am now in a place where I can try to help others, both in work as well as in Muay Thai training to create a difference in others lives.
